Valwood

Project description, detail

Working package 2

This working package comprises the evaluation of interim uses for the production if woody biomass. The biomass production will be achieved with the cultivation of fast-growing tree species that are managed in short rotation cycles of 2-4 years at maximum. A founded economic and ecological evaluation of these utilisation forms as am agricultural component in combination with production of valuable wood will take place.

With the help of terrestrial laser scanners the tree stand in the experimental areas are three-dimensionally quantified. Focal point will be the development of a new method for the description and quantification of spatially distributed structures in the forest und the objective, accurate and efficient determination of wood biomass based on the data of terrestrial laser scanners. The measured data will serve as the input parameters for the intended production of growth models.

Working package 4

Within the project different techniques for the stages of soil preparation and soil maintenance to ensure a planting success/stand maintenance and the clearing after recent cutting will be selected and tested. Next to productivity and costs social aspects (rural employment) and ecological aspects (soil pressure respectively soil compression, erosion risk) will be considered in the evaluation. The question of decentralised and centralised crushing of harvested biomass will be clarified. Next to the technical conditions the transportation distance to the place of utilisation plays a major role in the selection of the optimal system.

With concrete feasability-studies and time-studies on site that can be enhanced with simulation from known literature, the respective optimal system can be selected or system chains can be outlined.
